Workshop

The Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) partnered on a one-day workshop to kick-off implementation of land use solutions that can reduce the impacts of hazards in your community. 

The workshop focused on developing and adopting mitigation actions, updating land use and development codes to reduce the impact of natural disasters, and creating incentive programs to promote development in safer areas. It utilized the Planning for Hazards: Land Use Solutions guide, supplemental materials, and examples from communities that have successfully implemented a variety of tools and strategies. 

This workshop was free of charge to accepted communities and an ideal opportunity for:

• Jurisdictions updating their Comprehensive Land Use/Development/Building and Zoning Codes and Policies
• Counties beginning or completing the process of updating their FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan and looking to develop specific land use tools to achieve their mitigation goals
• Municipalities that would like to minimize the level of damage caused by hazards such as wildfires, geologic concerns, or floods by making updates to their development and redevelopment standards
